CBD Oils for Dogs

CBD Oil vs Hemp Oil – What’s the difference?

Hemp Plant

CBD Oil is extracted from hemp so CBD Oil and Hemp Oil must be the same thing, right? Wrong!

Both CBD Oil and Hemp Oil are extracted from Hemp, a member of the Cannabis Sativa family, and therefore do have some similar benefits and properties. They both have little to no risk of producing a high as research has shown the strains of hemp to contain less than 0.3% THC, which is the compound that causes the high that is often associated with marijuana.

Although both oils are extracted from the same plant they are extracted from different parts of the plant which makes a difference. You should be aware of the differences in order to make sure you are purchasing the right product for your dog.

What is CBD Oil? CBD Oil

CBD Oil or cannabiniol oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the hemp plant rather than the seeds and has a significant amount of cannabidiol. It has become very popular as it can be very helpful in the treatment of various conditions. It contains less than 0.3% THC and therefore provides the therapeutic benefits without the high found in marijuana.

CBD is not technically an oil. It is extracted from the plant and is then mixed with a carrier oil (sometimes this carrier oil is hemp seed oil). This is done so that it can be absorbed more efficiently into our systems. Some companies do use hemp oil as the carrier but others use coconut oil, grape seed oil, or a combination of the different oils.

Some companies label their product as CBD Hemp Oil. This is because there is Hemp and Marijuana based CBD. Labeling the product as CBD Hemp Oil is denoting that the CBD was extracted from industrial hemp which is legal in all 50 US states and in most countries. Additionally, this denotes that the THC is at the lower levels as the marijuana based CBD will contain higher levels of THC.

It is important to check the label on the product or to view the lab report to see if the product was manufactured by whole plants. Full Spectrum and Full Plant both mean that the whole plant was used for the extraction. This provides the best quality CBD Oil.

What is CBD Oil good for?

CBD Oil has been reported to help with a number of different medical issues including:

  • Treatment of Cancer
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Neurodegenerative disorders
  • Epilepsy

What is Hemp Oil? Hemp Seed

Hemp Oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. The seeds contain little to no TCH and therefore it also does not contain the high that is found in marijuana. Hemp Oil contains omega 3 and omega 6 which are two important items for skin health. It also contains antioxidants, minerals and nutrients.

The hemp seeds do contain CBD however when looking at the plant the least amount of CBD is found in the seeds. As it contains some CBD it can have some of the same benefits of CBD oil such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties however at a slightly lower concentration.

What is Hemp Oil good for?

Hemp Oil is used for a number of different purposes. Some primary uses include:

  • Cooking: Hemp oil is full of nutrients and can provide a crispy and nutty taste to foods. As a result it can be used as a replacement for olive oil in salads. It can also be used to replace other oils in cooking.
  • Moisturizer: It is a good natural moisturizer. It is used in making lotions and soaps.
  • Plastic: It can be used as the base for different forms of plastic as a substitute for petroleum.
  • Paints: It has been used in the production of paints as an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum based paints.
  • Bio-diesel fuel: Hemp oil can be used as a bio-diesel fuel much like other vegetable oils.

The method of extraction of the hemp seed oil is important. A high quality oil will be unrefined and cold pressed. No chemicals or bleaches are used in this method. The unrefined oil has a green color and a nutty flavor and it contains the active substances that exist in the seeds of the plant. The refined oil is clear with little to no flavor. This type is cheaper and has a longer shelf life however the method used strips the product of most of its vitamins and beneficial health substances.

The Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil Hemp Seed Oil

The main difference is that Hemp Oil contains lower levels of CBD, typically less than 25 parts per million, while CBD Oil can be up to 15% CBD. Hemp Seed Oil is used more for skin care and cooking while CBD Oil is used more for its medicinal properties.

What this means when buying CBD or Hemp Oil for your dog CBD Oil vs Hemp Oil

Keep these differences in mind when purchasing product for your pup. If you are looking for the medicinal properties to help with inflammation, pain, or anxiety you will want to make sure you are purchasing a good quality CBD Oil. If you are looking for something to help with skin conditions and itching a good quality Hemp Oil may suffice.
